FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AutonoSys Announces World's First Lidar Video CamerasUnique New Cameras Capture Full 3D Images At High Speed.Ottawa, Ontario October 23 2006 – AutonoSys
announced today the availability of the world’s first lidar video cameras, the
LVC0601 product line. Lidar, the light equivalent of radar, uses light to measure
ranges to objects. The basic
principle has been known for some time, and systems measuring approximately
10,000 ranges/second in a line-scan are commonly available. What sets the AutonoSys lidar video cameras apart is their ability to
measure ranges 50 times faster, at 500,000 ranges/second. With this amount of data per second, it becomes possible to
produce a full 3D image of a scene at video rates of 5-10 frames a second. AutonoSys' standard camera has a 30°
x 90°
field of view, with 144 x 480 pixel resolution, updated at 5 frames/second.
A second, high-resolution mode offers 288 x 960 pixel resolution, updated at
1.25 frames/second. In both modes, range to every pixel in the frame is measured to an accuracy of a few mm. Since the lidar uses its own internal light source to
illuminate the scene, the new cameras operate equally well day or night.
Field of view, resolution and frame rate can all be readily customized to
meet the needs of particular applications. Announcing these unique new cameras, Dr. Jim O’Neill, CEO of AutonoSys said, “Our new range of lidar video cameras represents a step change in the capabilities of commercially available 3D scanning systems. One of the first customers for these cameras was the US National Institute of Standards in Washington, proving that knowledgeable customers recognize the unique capabilities we are offering.” Applications for the new cameras include obstacle and terrain sensing for autonomous ground vehicles, digitization of scenes for computer animation studios, improved recognition of threats in security monitoring systems, and any other application where fast capture of 3D data is required. The rangefinder inside the lidar video camera was developed by Z+F Gmbh, a German manufacturer with over 20 years experience in the lidar field. The optical scanning mechanism and custom electronics in the lidar video cameras was developed by AutonoSys Inc., an Ottawa based high tech company specializing in systems and sub-systems for Autonomous Vehicles.
